Historical Summary
Fleet Composite Squadron Eight (VC-8) was originally comissioned as Guided Missile Service Squadron Two (GMSRON-2) at Chincoteague, VA in July 1958. In January 1959, the squadron transferred to Naval Station Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico. It was re-designated Fleet Utilty Squadron Eight (VU-8) the following year and in 1965 the squadron took on the designation of Fleet Composite Squadron Eight. With over fifty years experience, the personnel of VC-8 successfully undertook one of the most diverse missions ever assigned to an aviation unit in the service to the Atlantic Fleet. Following their last fight of the Navy's only remaining active duty A-4 Skyhawks from Roosevelt Roads, Fleet Composite Squadron Eight disestablished with honors on August 23, 2003 in Oceana, VA marking the "End of an Era" in naval aviation history.
